The Web, The Internet, The Machine
This Blog is about leveraging the power of the Internet in all aspects of business. Every day it is more crucial for business owners of all sizes to utilize the capabilities of the Internet to enhance their product and service offerings. The smallest businesses can now compete with the largest of enterprises, at no other time in history have the resources and technology available to large enterprises also been available to the little guy. Also at no other time has the consumer enjoyed such power to compare prices, get recommendations and share good and bad experiences with millions in a blink of an eye. The World is definitely changing and the Internet is no longer a luxury but a necessity for business success.
If you own or work in a small to medium business than you will find the content here insightful and actionable. The posts will provide useful advice but also explain the reasoning given the current state of technology and the realities of the marketplace. I have decided to change the focus of this blog to be broader and not specific to SMB's. Although, my passion remains for the small to medium business owner and I still will on occasion focus in on specific examples of "using the machine" for SMB success. I now realize that a broader discussion about "the Machine" that is the Web/Internet would better represent me as an individual and thus allow me to more succesfully maintain this blog. All topics will still be about the machine but will include general aspects of business (large and small) as well as the IT profession and other various technical topics.
The name Using The Machine is inspired by the wonderful video titled "The Machine is Us/ing Us" created by Michael Wesch, Assistant Professor of Cultural Anthropology at Kansas State University. This video does an amazing job at explaining how the Web has evolved over the past ten years and introduces some of things we need to begin rethinking given the implications of the Internet to business and society.
